Nothing is more heart-warming than having your puppy excited to see you. The only problem is what if your puppy is one of those who get so excited that he piddles right on your floor? Urination problems are common, even with house trained puppies and dogs. It is a normal reaction, even if it is a bit disgusting to have to clean up afterwards!

This excitement piddling usually happens with puppies rather than older dogs. It is caused by a deficiency in bladder control. Please note that many times, your puppy has not idea he is just peed. He will not understand if you punish him for it. What you should not do is get upset and mad. The reason is that excitement to see you will slowly morph into something called submissive urination. Your puppy will do anything to make you happy and showing that you are the boss by peeing on the floor is often what happens.

It is important to note that your puppy's bladder will eventually mature and he should be able to better control his bodily functions. Therefore, the excitement piddles will go away in time. However, that does not help you to keep your puppy dry now does it?

The best offensive is a good defense ... at least, that is what they say in football. Well, that philosophy can translate into the excitement piddling problem as well. To curb a lot of these accidents, you want to keep your dog from becoming too keyed up in the first place. If other activities, sights and sounds also make him piddle in excitement, expose him to those things often. Eventually, the novelty of it all wears off and therefore, no more piddles. And if you alone are the cause of his piddling problems, when you get home, ignore him for a few minutes.

Let your puppy wind down a bit and then leave again. Repeat the "come and go" process a few times, always ignoring him when you do. Once you recognize that your puppy loses interest in the whole ordeal, then you can approach him and say hello with petting and love. Be prepared to do this routine each day for as long as it takes until your puppy just waits for you to recognize him without the piddling problem.

To get your puppy acclimated to visitors and prevent the excitement piddling at that time too, you may have to repeat the same process with them as well. Eventually, you will have a dog who can control himself when he sees you after a separation. This "come and go" routine should also incorporate the commands "heel" and "sit" as he gets older.

To recap, the most important thing you can do for your puppy is to not get angry and scold him whenever he piddles in excitement. Just remember that he is so happy to see you because you are his owner and master and he loves you. Be consistent with your routine and you will soon not have to clean up messes each and every time you come home.
