A training collar is but one name for the apparatus that goes around your dog's neck. These items are called choke collars, slip collars and even a choke chain. Sounds a bit medieval doesn't it? The reality of it is that if used properly, they make excellent tools when it comes to training your pooch.

While a training collar is a successful instrument, it has to be used correctly so that it provides an effective result for you while being safe for your dog. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a training collar for your dog:

1. The fit of the training collar - It's important that the training collar be correctly tailored to your dog. A properly fitted collar makes the training process easier and safer for all parties involved. The right size collar should fit snugly but still be comfortable when going over the dog's head. Being too loose or too tight is a concern. A tight training collar can be hard to take off while a loose one will be ineffective or fall off.

Measure your dog's neck in inches. Then, add two to three inches to the measurement. This will allow some leeway to fit it over your dog's head. Most of these training collar chains are found in two inch increments.

2. Getting the collar on your dog correctly - As with anything else, there is a wrong and right way to fit your dog with a training collar. Doing it wrong could seriously hurt your dog. Refer to the fit of the training collar when determining the "how" of getting the collar on your dog.

3. Proper use of the training collar - Remember, this collar is not to be used as a punishment tool, only as a reminder when your dog engages in a negative behavior you are trying to correct. Continuous pressure should not be applied when the collar is worn by your dog.

4. The link size as well as the weight of the chain on your dog's training collar is an important consideration - The link size and weight of the chain should reflect the type of dog you own. If you have a Great Dane or other large dog, obviously the chain will be heavier and thicker than if it were for a medium sized dog like an Australian Shepherd or a small dog like some type of terrier.

5. The right place in which to fit the training collar on your dog's neck - When you place the collar around your dog's neck ensure that the part which is connected to the leash is located at the top of the neck. With this placement, the training collar will release when you loosen the leash. The reason why training collars are effective is because you can tighten it quickly when you are trying to correct a behavior.

When purchasing a training collar for your dog, make sure that it is made from sturdy materials. You don't want the collar to break at an inopportune time such as near a busy road or a playground, especially if your dog is not accustomed to these situations.
